Introduce your students to recent Black History that focuses on the 1980s through 2010s in a variety of texts, including nonfiction, fiction, and poetry. These reading texts cover a variety of topics, from Florence Griffith Joyner to Hurricane Katrina to Shirley Ann Jackson. As these topics were selected and written by students, they are engaging while still meeting Common Core Standards.

These reading passages are perfect for: warm-up, bell work, homework, or teacher-led instruction. Students can also use it independently in literacy groups and guided reading groups.

A variety of learning activities are included - written response, dialectical journaling, Venn diagrams, gallery walks, word cafes, and art projects.
